The US Washington 1964 Silver Quarter coin was minted before 1965. The 1964 Silver Quarter coin, Roosevelt dime coin, Kennedy half coin and Peace Dollar coin, all these coins contain 90% silver. Yet, sadly the Peace dollar does not exist any more because they were sent back for melt down before they hit the streets. But that's a story for another day. The nickel has about 35% silver content and the penny was most often copper.

People will invest in silver and gold bullion when they are in times of economic trouble like butter on bread as a hedge to fight against inflation. The price of a 1 oz silver bullion eagle will cost you about 20 - 30 dollars at today's prices. These silver bullion coins might be out of your price range.

This is where the silver quarter coins minted 1964 and before, could be a good alternative to the full 1 oz bullion coins and bars. The value and worth of these silver quarter coins can be bought for about .50 - a piece at today's prices. The price will vary with the spot price, as we head into 2010. The silver quarters are generally lower priced than bullion coins, and are fractionally smaller making them more affordable.

It is getting harder by the day to find 1964 silver quarter coin, dime coin, half dollar coin, and dollar coins in circulation today. People like myself search for these silver coins. The automatic sorting machines suck out the rest of the silver coins, even nickel coins get sucked up and melted for profitable gains. Yet still it should not stop one from looking for them little gems. I can spot them pretty fast now that I have looked for the silver coins for years. At this time, I do pick up the odd silver coin but because I live in Canada it is a little easer to find a Canadian pre 1968 silver coin than it would be to find a 1964 quarter and older coin. It can be fun to spot and find a silver quarter, from change because the tiller did not know that they just gave you 3 dollars in change instead of 25 cents.

Pre 1964 silver quarter coins are collectible and somewhat still cheap.

  2. QUESTION:
how much is an 1878 us silver dollar worth now?
i have had this not so long its a hand me down im not getting rid of it i was just curious of just how much its value is. its not in perfect condition but its not bad either it has only some what looks like rust stains on one side and on the other seems as if its crushed lead but its not.

    • ANSWER:
There are several different varieties of silver dollar that year, but most of them in an "average circulated" condition are worth about -.

If you look at the back of the coin, right above the "DO" in "DOLLAR", you might see one or two letters. That shows what mint it was made at. If your dollar has the letters "CC", it was made in Carson City, NV, and might bring (again, depending on condition) around .

Whatever you do, don't try to "improve" the coin in any way by cleaning it or trying to make it "shiny", not matter how harmless someone says it is. Collectors hate cleaned coins, and if you clean yours, you'll have nothing but a lump of metal worth it's silver value of about .

Couple Days Ago i found a 1878 Morgan Silver dollar, Seems to be in good condition and it has CC on the Bottom part of the backside of the coin and I heard that plays a big roll in the value. X. It also seems to have 7 feathers or something like that from i could see and seems that also plays a part in the value along with other things i can't really determine.

    • ANSWER:
There is only one variety of tail feathers for the 1878-CC (Carson City mint) Morgan dollar. A grade of very good for a Morgan dollar is very low and the coin would be well worn. There would be very little hair on Liberty's bust and almost no feathers on the eagle with none on the breast. Value around .00 for that grade It goes up the scale to in grade extra fine which has a lot of detail but still wear here and there. The more nick and bruises the less the value. Hope this helps.

  8. QUESTION:
i have an 1878 silver dollar in mint condition. how much is it worth?

    • ANSWER:
Need more information. There are 5 varieties of 1878 dollars minted in Philadelphia ( no mint mark ). Then there are two with mint marks. S for San Francisco and CC for Carson City. Mint mark is below the wreath beneath the eagle. Actually it would be very hard to explain the differences, due to limited space and you not being able to see a photo of the types. You need to go to a library and get a Guide to U.S. coins ( the official red book ) or Walter Breens a guide to U.S. coins and check it out. In mint state grades the value of the different types can be a few hundred dollars apart. Depends on how high your coin grades. See a coin dealer, he can grade it for you.

  9. QUESTION:
How much is a one Dollar coin of 1887 worth?
I urgently need to get some money, I have some collectors coins and before taking them to the coins place in Houston (I-10) I need to know how much I can get for them without being ripped off.

    1 silver dollar - year 1887
    1 silver dollar - year 1878
    1 dollar liberty - back says 1776-1976
    1 collector dollar coin - year 2003 - 1ounce fine silver

Please help me, I need it urgently.

    • ANSWER:
The value of the 1878 and 1887 dollars would depend on their condition and mintmark if any. The mintmark is located under the wreath of the eagle. Common mint mark dollars of those two dates and in average condition is worth about , up to to if having luster but not cleaned. Both dollars are 90% silver. The 1776-1976 dollar is an Eisenhower Bicentennial, and value depends on once again, the condition and type. The clad type if circulated is worth a small premium, under .50. If it's the 40% silver type then it's in the region of - per piece, with luster. The 1 ounce silver is an American Silver Eagle. 2003 is a very recent issue and selling around to each uncirculated, and from for the proof version. Proof values are higher for coins with deep mirror.
