postheadericon Much Silver Dollar Worth

The majority of us would prefer our money in paper bill form, but for most of our history, United States money came in coins. For the average person, dollar coins were the most popular and the widest circulated. Even although coins have been minted in the United States in silver, others have been made in gold and in other base metal versions. Gold and gold-colored coins have also been produced by the United States. The current Sacagawea dollar is normally referred to as "golden". The United States Mint first released silver dollar coins, the first coins issued, in 1794. Nowadays, the term "silver dollar coins" usually refers to any dollar coins anyhow of the metal used. Most people call money made of white metal and worth one-dollar, silver dollar coins but that is not accurate. The term silver dollar may refer to any white metal coin issued by the United States with a face value of one dollar. Some insist that a dollar coin is not a silver dollar unless it contains some of that metal. The history of silver dollar coins is very extensive and many variations have been produced over the years. From 1794 until 1836, the United States Mint produced millions of silver dollar coins. The 1804 silver dollar is one of the rarest and most valuable coins in the world. Coin collectors highly prize all silver dollar coins from this period. Some of the different types of silver dollar coins include the Flowing Hair version, the Draped Bust style, and the Gobrecht dollar. The dollar coins made with silver that most people are familiar with are the Seated Liberty coin and the Peace Dollar. The Peace Dollar, produced before and during the Great Depression, was still in popular circulation even after World War II. Silver coins have always been a rich part of the United States monetary heritage. Attempts to revive these coins, even without the silver content, have failed in the last part of the twentieth century. The last time people took to these coins was the Eisenhower dollar made in the 1970's. A further attempt to get people to use these coins was tried with the Anthony dollar in 1980. Nobody wanted it. People had become too used to folding money. The Sacagawea dollar in a gold color, and therefore not really a silver dollar coin, started to be circulated in 2000. Other countries such as Canada, Great Britain, and Australia have had better success with their own versions of these coins. Of course, they forced people to use these coins as they withdrew the paper money in circulation for their one unit currency.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How much is a 1880 o Morgan head Silver Dollar Worth?
I want to know, how much is a 1880 o Silver Dollar worth? By the way the silver dollar is BU condition.

    • ANSWER:
Coin value is a combination of rarity and condition. In this case, 1880-o is common in low grades, common in lower uncirculated grade, and extremely rare in true gem condition.

From Coin Values magazine (estimated retail prices, not what a dealer would offer):

low grade circulated: (just silver value)
      low grade uncirculated (MS-60):
      nearly gem (MS-64): ,000
      gem uncirculated (MS-65): ,000

The link below can give you a rough idea how a collector or dealer would grade the coin. If your coin is close to gem condition, you should get it professionally graded by PCGS or NGC,

Does anyone know how much a 1891 Morgan Silver Dollar is worth? I have one that is in excellent shape and was curious about the value. Thanks.

  3. QUESTION:
What is a 1923 silver liberty dollar worth which has a 7 imprinted on Lady Liberty's neck ?
What is a 1923 silver liberty dollar worth which has a 7 imprinted on Lady Liberty's neck? Also the letter "u" in trust is a "v".

    • ANSWER:
Can't speak for the 7, but to have a V in place of a U is a carry over from Latin. There was no letter U in classical Latin, but the V that they used was pronounced like a U. For information's sake, there was no J in Latin either, so the name that you know as Julius Caesar would have been spelled Ivlivs with the initial i being a soft pronunciation. Caesar is pronounced with a hard K sound, so it would be pronounced like the German Kaiser

  4. QUESTION:
How much are my Silver Dollars worth?
How much are my silver dollars worth?
    I have a 2.00 one, the year of 1953.
I have another 2.00 one, the year of 1963.
Another, 5.00, the year of 1934.
    The last one,10.00, 1934.
Any help? :D They belong to my grandparnets. Thank-You!

    • ANSWER:
Are these paper money? I'm asking because the US didn't strike silver dollars in the 1950's and 1960's, but we did issue currency with those dates (as well as 1934).

The problem is that if these are paper money, we'd need a lot more information to give you more than just a rough idea of their worth.

Generally, bills from Series 1953 and 1963 will bring you about if you sell them to a coin dealer, assuming that they have any wear on them.

The bill will typically bring about -, and the will get you about .

However, there are exceptions that are worth quite a lot of money. To give you a complete answer, we'd need to know the following things about the bills:

Is there a letter after the year, and if so, what is it?

What color is the Treasury seal on the right side of the note?

Is there a star in the serial number, either at the beginning or at the end?

Just as an example, there are 28 possible permutations just for the bill. Without knowing the added info, it would take a whole book to give you a complete answer.

  5. QUESTION:
How much is my miniature 1972 Eisenhower (IKE) Silver Dollar worth?
My 1972 IKE Coin is a mini version of the 1972 Eisenhower Silver Dollar. Is it worth anything? If so how much would you think?

    • ANSWER:
Mini coins of all kinds have been around since the 1960's and continue today. Most sold in sets of cent through 1/2 dollar or when dollars were made they added that to the sets. Most sets sold in the range and singles for a each. They are a novelty item and not a coin collecting item. Most are good conversation items and good for a joke or two. I was given one and the person said, see what happened to the dollar its value shrunk. They are just a fun type item.

    • ANSWER:

      http://www.mycoincollecting.com/
      http://coincollector.org/

I doubt if it's worth (but that may be what he paid for it?), but should be worth at least to .

  7. QUESTION:
How much is a silver Certificate (paper money) worth?
And also, how much is a silver dollar worth, or I guess I should ask, how much does it weigh?
    And also a half dollar?

    • ANSWER:
silver certificate is categorized as representative money. It was a part of USA's circulation paper currency. These were made in a way that these would be redeemable in the face value of silver dollar coins and then later, raw silver bullion. Starting off as large notes, the size was eventually reduced in the year 1928. That was the year when rest of the US paper money size was reduced to what it is now.

How much is a 1972 silver dollar worth?
How much is a 1972 silver dollar worth

    • ANSWER:
1972 dollar coins are not silver, but rather copper-nickel.

Circulating dollars dated 1972 are not silver. Look at the edge - it's made of the same copper/nickel "sandwich" metal used in dimes, quarters, and halves. They're worth anywhere from face value to .25

However, if it has an "S" mintmark and is mint-sealed in Mylar with a blue envelope, it is an uncirculated 40% silver coin worth about . If it is a proof coin sealed in a hard plastic case and packaged in a brown box (also with an "S" mintmark) it lists at - .

  9. QUESTION:
How much is a 1921 S Morgan Silver Dollar worth?
How much is a 1921 S Morgan Silver Dollar worth?

    • ANSWER:
That is one of the three most common dates in the Morgan dollar series. It would sell for about in average circulated condition, up to about for a really nice uncirculated example.

  10. QUESTION:
How much is a 1976 silver dollar worth now?
I have a silver dollar from 1976 and i am just wondering how much it is worth.

    • ANSWER:
If you mean the 1776-1976 Ike dollar then the silver ones (S mint mark) in a blue envelope and the proofs in a brown box that are 40% silver sell for around .50-. The others are clad and not silver and are worth in circulated grades and a few dollars in mint state.

  11. QUESTION:
How Much Are 2000-2004 US Flying Eagle Silver Dollars Worth?
I was cleaning out some stuff and found some US silver dollars (one each 2000-2004). They are the US Flying Eagle 1 oz fine silver dollar coins. Are they worth selling or only worth ? I tried finding the answer online but came up blank.

    • ANSWER:
There are no silver flying eagle dollars issued from 2000-2004. You must mean Silver Eagles they have a Walking Liberty on the obverse and an eagle with it's wings open but is not flying, on the reverse. They are actually larger than the old Morgan silver dollars. I hope they were in some kind of protective device. the 2000 through 2004 sell for the same .90 each. Dealers of course pay less. What you have is considered a bullion coin and it's value depends on the price of silver and mintage. The reason it has a dollar on it, is to legitimize it as a coin of the U.S. It was a sneaky way to make a medal a coin.

  12. QUESTION:
How much is a 1890 O Morgan Silver Dollar worth?
How much is a 1890 O Morgan Silver Dollar worth?

    • ANSWER:

How much is a silver dollar worth?
I have a '77 silver dollar with Eisenhower on it. The back pictures an eagle on the moon, with the earth in the background (a moon landing commemoration?). Anyway, Im just curious, not planning on selling.

    • ANSWER:
To the right Numatist it could be worth a lot.

      1) its probably been circulated so worth less.
      2) damage to the coin or wear and tear decrease the value.

your best bet at this point is too hold on to it as it will increase in value over time even with it being circulated and having wear and tear.

  15. QUESTION:
What is my 1922 unmarked silver dollar worth?
I have a near mint condition 1922 silver dollar with no mint mark. It has been in a plastic case since I received it. It's luster is great and it looks like the coin was made then immediately put in it's protective case. Any rough idea what it is worth?

    • ANSWER:
1922-P is one of the highest mintage coins in the Peace series. It's far from rare, so value is only going to be the in silver it has unless it's in a Mint State grade of 62 or higher. Even then, values aren't more than higher until you get to MS64. If you don't know how to determine grade, you'll need an expert, like a coin dealer who's not interested in buying. Someone who is may undergrade it.

  18. QUESTION:
How much is the 1904 American Silver Dollar worth?
I have a 1904 American Silver Dollar with what looks like an eagle printed on one side. How much would that be worth?

    • ANSWER:
It depends on the coins grade and mint mark if any. The mint mark is on the eagle side near the bottom under the wreath. The 1904 (no mint mark Philadelphia mint) and 1904-O (New Orleans mint) are worth about to in the circulated grades very good to extra fine, more if in mint state. The 1904-S (San Francisco mint) is worth -5 in that same grade ranges. Values above are about what a dealer would pay.

  19. QUESTION:
What is my 1896 O Mint Silver Dollar worth?
I have an 1896 silver dollar with "o" mint. There are no visible scratches, and when viewed by the naked eye is nearly perfect. How much money is this worth?

    • ANSWER:
The mintage of 4,900,000 was not small, but this issue saw heavy circulation, making high-grade examples rare. There are rare coins, and then there is condition rarity, and this coin is one of the latter.

Your coin needs to receive an opinion of grade from at least three reputable coin dealers. If it grades at the Mint State (MS) level, then you are going to want to have it professionally graded by one of the top two companies, PCGS or NGC. It will be worth a minimum of ,000 at MS60, the lowest Mint State uncirculated grade.

Here is an example of what condition rarity means for prices:

      The very common 1896 -P

      MS60 -
      MS62 -
      MS63 -
      MS64 -

      And now, the 1896 - O

      MS60 - ,000+
      MS62 - ,750
      MS63 - ,500
      MS64 - ,500

And that's why accurate, professional grading is so important. Just one grade means a huge difference in value.

  22. QUESTION:
Why are 50 cent coins are bigger than silver dollars but they are worth less?
Why are 50 cent coins are bigger than silver dollars but they are worth less? How come nickels are worth less than dimes but are bigger?
Is it because of the metal they use?

    • ANSWER:
There isn't really any reason. These days the metal is worth nothing. A coin is simply representing a money value and isn't necessarily worth anything at all. It just happens to be that some coins are bigger than others. Funny story: In the old days, coins were made out of materials that were worth money. In Australia, our 50c coin had a bit of silver in it. Melted down, the coin was worth about 60c! So people bought heaps of 50c coins from the bank, melted them and made a 20% profit. They then changed the ingredients of the metal...

  26. QUESTION:
How much is my silver dollar worth?
I have a 1922 silver dollar that has a misprint in the "in god we trust". And just wonder about how much I could get for it?

    • ANSWER:
Let me guess--the misprint is that it's spelled "TRVST", right?

_All_ Peace dollars are like that. During the early part of the 20th century, there was a big "neoclassical" movement in the arts. Since the Romans used a "V" instead of a "U", it was common to see it in things like medals and coins. The Standing Liberty quarter, which dates from about the same time period, not only has "TRVST", but "E PLVRIBVS VNVM" as well.

(The "neoclassical" movement is why the Lincoln memorial looks like someone dropped a Greek or Roman temple right in the middle of Washington).

1922 Peace dollars are common from all three mints. It's only going to be worth its silver value (about right now) unless the coin has no wear on it at all.

  29. QUESTION:
What is my 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar worth?
I have an 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar I cannot really find any steady information on what it is actually worth! I have no Idea if it is circulated or uncirculated! It is in fantastic condition! It is kept in an air tight clear plastic casing! And there is really no visible wear on it! It looks like it may have a few dings but I think most coins get those when they are being made! Anyways if there is anyone who knows anything about coins I could really use some answers! It would be most Helpful!

    • ANSWER:
OK--the difference between a circulated and an uncirculated coin is that an uncirculated coin has no sign of wear. Even the slightest hint of wear, and the coin is circulated.

The first signs of wear will be on the high points of each side of the coin. On the Morgan, that's the center of the eagle's breast, and the hair over Liberty's ear. Hold the coin under a fairly bright light, and tilt it. What you're looking for is a change in the way the light reflects off the surface. If those two spots suddenly look "dull" or "different", that's probably a tiny amount of wear affecting how the surface reflects the light.

The Morgan was minted in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans, so we'll need to see if there is a mintmark, right above the "DOL" in "dollar". An "O" means New Orleans, an "S" is San Francisco, and no letter means Philadelphia.

That's important because while the Philadelphia and New Orleans coins are worth about the same amount (around , even if slightly worn), the San Francisco coin is much less common, and worth quite a bit more. A San Francisco coin with just slight wear on the high points (a grade called "About Uncirculated" or "AU-50") commonly sells at a coin dealer for a little over 0.

After having written all that, I wonder if the clear plastic casing has any sort of a label on it? If it does, could you tell us what all the writing on the label is? Some coins have been "encapsulated", meaning they've been graded and authenticated by a third party company. If it has, and it's been done by one of the "biggies" (PCGS and NGC), we can generally accept the grade they give the coin, and that makes valuing it a lot easier.

  30. QUESTION:
what is the value of a 1796 flowing hair counterfeit liberty silver dollar worth?
The US mint never minted a 1796 liberty flowing hair silver dollar they did in 1794 and 1795 so this is counterfeit as it was found on the internet on a different website but it did not tell me if there was any value to this coin.
Am looking for serious answers as this coin if it were authentic at good condition would be valued at around 840.00 dollars.

    • ANSWER:
An authentic coin in good condition is worth quite a bit more than 0. A counterfeit is worthless, unless it's made in real silver, and then it's worth the silver value.

  31. QUESTION:
How much is my silver dollar worth?
A few years ago I was given a .999 pure silver dollar as a tip. It weighs 1 oz. How much is it worth?

    • ANSWER:
      .43

  32. QUESTION:
How much would a 1977 silver dollar be worth?
My grandma gave me a silver dollar made of 100% pure silver. It is a D mint. It is from 1977.

    • ANSWER:
If we're talking about a US dollar, it's not made out of silver. It's made out of a "sandwich" of two layers of copper and nickel around a core of pure copper.

If there is no wear on it at all, you might be able to get for it from a dealer, if it's a nicer than average coin. If it has any wear on it, it's only going to be worth about a dollar.

  33. QUESTION:
What is the ACTUAL value of a US paper dollar?
It is sad that the older silver dollars are worth over .94 each and that four quarters are woth less than one quarter in value.
What is the one dollar bill worth according to a silver dollar? Or since the Fed Reserve was created.

    • ANSWER:
The value of a dollar is always a dollar for transactional purposes. Always.

The value of older silver dollars is a dollar for transactions. But those dollars have silver and age. As an object and not a legal tender, they have market value. However, you cannot go to a soda machine and have it give you .94 worth of soda.

Value of objects is based on what the buyer is willing to pay. People put value in silver and in rare objects. Over time, any object, be it a silver dollar, an Indian arrow head, or an old Coke bottle will be of more value than when it was originally created. This has nothing to do with the change in the new objects, but in the desire for the old objects.

  35. QUESTION:
how much is an 1845 us silver dollar worth?
i have an 1845 silver dollar, i want to know if there are any tricks to find out if its real.
and how much it is actually worth?

    • ANSWER:
Your coin is called a Seated Dollar. Even in heavily worn condition, an undamaged Seated Dollar would retail for 0 or so. You would be a fool to sell the coin for silver value () when it is worth far more to a collector.

A coin dealer is your best bet to authenticate. A dealer should offer about 60% of retail - they must have a profit margin. If genuine, the coin is too rare to bother with a pawn shop.

Coin value is a function of rarity and condition. The PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) link below can give you an idea of how a collector or dealer would grade the coin.

If your coin came from an ebay seller in China, safe to assume it is fake. China is the main source of counterfeit US coins.

What is the difference between an 1889 Morgan Silver Dollar and an 1889CC Morgan Silver Dollar?
I have a Morgan Silver Dollar, and I want to know how much its worth.

    • ANSWER:
The mint mark is located on the back at the six o'clock position underneath the eagle. CC (for Carson City mint) is by far the best mint mark and 1889 CC silver dollars are quite rare.
The other possibilities are no mint mark (Philadelphia mint), O (New Orleans mint) and S (San Francisco mint).
Condition of the coin makes a lot of difference, also.

Here is a listing of all 1889 silver dollars presently for sale on eBay. Once you determine the mint mark, this will give you an idea of what your coin will sell for:

How much are my silver dollars worth?
I have a few silver dollars and Im wondering if they're worth anything. The quantity and dates are as follows...

    one 1926
    five 1923
    one 1922
    one 1921

    • ANSWER:
There is a dependence on condition, and whether the 1921 is the last of the Morgan dollars worth less or the first of the Peace dollars worth somewhat more.
The metal content is currently about each, so the low value is about each. Better conditions have collector value and the 1921 Peace dollar would be about . Much more value by condition.

  44. QUESTION:
how to know what a 1899 silver dollars worth before selling it?
i have 2 silver dollar i want to sell but dont want to get taken i just want a fare price

    • ANSWER:
If the coins have not been cleaned and are damage free the 1899 Morgan dollar in grade very good is worth about 5.00, in grade very fine (two thirds of the hair lines from top of forehead to ear visible, some wear on eagles breast, the value is 5.00. The coin is worth more as the grades get higher. The above prices are around what a dealer would pay. It is always best to go to more than one dealer. The 1899 is not a rare coin but is a scarce one for the mintage was only 330,000 but a lot have survived that is why the coin is not worth more. Hope this helps.

  46. QUESTION:
How much would a 1885 morgan silver dollar in vg condition go for?
My dad has a lot of old coins we came across a 1885 morgan silver dollar in vg condition we have no clue what it would be worth today, but we would love to find out.

    • ANSWER:
      Interesting find.

An 1885 morgan dollar is worth in VG-8 to collectors using the Numismedia.com price guide. This guide is trusted by collectors to value their coins. DO NOT use the Redbook for coin prices, the prices in that book are higher than each coins actual value. Most people buy it just to know about coin varieties. Not for prices.

Although, is there a mint mark on this coin (D, S, O, CC)? Because an 1885 CC coin is worth 4 in VG condition.

This is what I recommend you do when valuing your coins. First identify each coins denomination (cent, nickle, dime. etc.) and any mint mark (D, S, O, CC) The mint marks tell you where the coin was made, and many are sought at by collectors.

Then go to www.pcgs.com/photograde This website is a creditied photograding website in which you compare your coin to the coins online in regaurd to their grade so you can know how your coin grades on the numismatic grading scale.

Finally go to Numismedia.com and search for the coins you are looking for the retail prices of your coins. This website is trusted by collectors country-wide and is updated weekly

This way you can get a realistic view on your coins value. One last thing, DO NOT CLEAN YOUR COINS. Cleaning the coins removes 90% of its collector value, and in your case would reduce it down to its silver value. which means that 4 coin is now worth maybe

  47. QUESTION:
Two silver dollars and one gold dollar~ How much are these coins worth?
I have two silver dollars and one gold dollar. The date on one silver dollar is 1985, and it has no ridges on the side. The other is dated 1992, and it does have ridges. The gold dollar is dated 2000 and has no ridges. Please tell me how much these coins are worth. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
There were no silver dollars made in 1985 and only the 1992 Columbus Quincentenary dollar was made that year with Columbus on it. The gold color dollar from 2000 has to be a Sacagawea dollar and it is not made of gold but manganese brass. It is common with a mintage of 767,140,000 from the Philly mint and 518,916,000 from the Denver mint. The 1985 item may be a token of some kind as well as the 1992 if it is not what I mentioned above. Would need to know what is on both sides of the items to help further.

  48. QUESTION:
What will the value of a 1935 silver dollar be with every 10 years that goes by?
My son has a silver dollar he wanted to know what it's worth. We looked it up and it looks to be around . Is there a way to know what it will be worth if he saves it? It's tarnished, but not worn or damaged.

"Trust" is spelled with a V instead of a U, but all the other Us are U. (ie., United States and E Pluribus Unum). Eagle on the back and Statue of Liberty head is on the front.
how do I know if it's a peace dollar? I looked on ebay and some are for sale for some hefty prices. It looks the same as mine, but whadoiknow.
It is a peace dollar. I found it at the bottom.

    • ANSWER:
There is no way to predict the value of collector's items. Their value is determined by the whims of the market. Even the authors of the book you looked it up in can only estimate its worth because they know that people have recently paid for similar items. Most likely it will grow more valuable in the next decade, but there's no guarantee even of that. That is a really cool find though, if I were you, I'd encourage him to keep it.
